Eglu Chicken Coop

May 17th, 2005, by Rich.

There are some things in life that are just plain cool. Totally bonkers, but cool.

Say hello to Eglu.

This is one such thing, the Eglu, by Omlet. Some call it the iMac for chickens.

Some call it really rather expensive (at a shade under £400 for the whole thing, including 2 live animals, but without hard disk). Some, however, factor in the cost of 6 free range eggs and quickly realize that it’s not such a bad deal after all. With the added bonus that chickens aren’t chicken, and will stand up to the local cat population, they make a rather interesting guardian of the garden.

Eglu, with protective fence.

Granted the more practically minded among us could build a chicken coop, but could we build one that looked like an iMac? (At this point I’ve seriously started to consider looking on [goog]ebay for a second hand iMac[/goog] that I could strip the innards out of, but anything I could make wouldn’t have the handy litter tray.)

I want one. I’m not going to get one until I’ve had a good read about chickens to see if I’d actually be a suitable owner; but these seem way more sensible than a puppy because they don’t need walking and their waste makes good compost, oh, and they lay eggs.

my vet told me, “if the chicken gets sick, you’re best off culling it.” In Texas chickens can sell for $5 - $15. Vet’s bill will end up costing you,for a chicken; $100

We have 2 chickens and an eglu, our suburban garden is frequently visited by foxes even during the day.The eglu is fox proof , our girls are let out whenever we are in the garden along with our 3 Westies and all 5 mill around happily together so don’t let owning a dog put you off having chickens.

Free Ranged chickens means they are able to eat or provide some of their food via foraging. (meaning not fed store bought feed)
My chickens are free ranged birds but I do bring them in at night to protect them from predators such as coyotes and wild dogs racoons and the such. They have become acustomed to the time when they should be home and they go back into the coop to roost and I close and lock the door behind them. Next morning they are waiting at the door for me to open it and let them out for the day.

Let’s get one thing straight…… When a chicken becomes a hen it is at “POL” - that means ‘point of lay’ and it is then that the bird starts to lay eggs. Please note the following ….. Hens which lay eggs are NOT chickens… they are HENS, so can we please stop calling them chickens? When a dog becomes adult we call it a dog, when a kitten becomes adult we call it a cat - we do not call adult dogs ‘puppies’ and we do not call adult cats ‘kittens’. We don’t call adult cows ‘calves’, we don’t call adult horses ‘foals’, we don’t call adult pigs ‘piglets’, we don’t call adult people ‘children’ so why on earth do people insist on calling hens ‘chickens’??
As much as I admire our friends across ‘the pond’ I have to say it is just another Americanism and it has to stop!

Michael: Having picked myself up from the floor, I would like to point out that “Chicken” is the species, “Hen” is the sex. Defined in the dictionary as “A domestic fowl”, the term “chicken” refers to both male and female birds, adult and young. Get your facts straight.

Keeley, learn to spell and use the written word correctly! The
number ‘4′ is a value and apart from totally ignoring
the fact that when writing ‘I’ as oneself then it should
be written as a capital letter; and did you really mean that you
had dyed your rabbit - if so what colour?

    P. Dantic Says:

Dear Keeley, I do hope you acquired an Eglu for your rabbit. Whatever colour it is !! Please ignore spiteful comments from loveless, stuck up, spinsters. Who need to GET A LIFE !! Please excuse any grammatical errors. This is an informal site not the O.E.D.
P.S. Lovin the idea of the Eglu.
