Ex-Mozilla Group on LinkedIn

There’s now an Ex-Mozilla group on LinkedIn (in fact it’s been there for a while and is growing slowly by word of mouth). The group is associated with Alex Totic’s ex-mozilla website, and run in the same spirit, for all the employees that used to work at Netscape, from Mosaic Communication Corporation to AOL.

LinkedIn is a social-networking site that has focussed on corporate relationships in order to grow; the idea is that you can use it to find or advertise jobs, with the benefit for both parties can see who they have in common and get a better feel for if they are a good match. The benfit of having an alumni or corporate group on LinkedIn is that members can contact other members without needing to be directly connected, so it’s a larger circle of reputation.

Members also get a nice badge on their LinkedIn profile.

Eligibility

I’ve recently started receiving applications from a lot of AOL employees who started working on “The Netscape Brand” long after the merger. The ex-mozilla group is modeled around the ex-mozilla website - it’s for people who worked at Netscape and is not intended as an AOL alumni group (no such group appears to exist yet or I’d link to it here). If you didn’t work at Netscape, you’re not eligible to join, so please don’t ask. (One guy + admin buden + real life) / bandwidth = no can do, sorry.

How to Join

  1. Register with linked-in.
  2. Make the admin burden easy by making your association as obvious as possible. Please set up your links with other ex-mozilla folk before applying. The result of doing this is that when your profile is checked, it will be obvious that:
    1. you’ve listed Netscape as a former place of work and
    2. that there are ex-mozilla folk who are close to (or in) your connection cloud who can corroborate your story.

If you have endorsements on your Netscape profile, this is really helpful too.

  3. You did all that already? Great! Apply here.

Upon application, if you’re not personally known by the group admins, you’ll be looked up on linked-in, on the ex-mozilla website, and on the web in general, if there is enough evidence to support your claim that you’re one of us, then you’re in.

If your application gets bounced and you think it’s a mistake, read this page again, and if you still think you’re eligible, add more detail to your profile and re-apply.

LinkedIn Admin

Linked-in do not alert group administrators when there is a new application (duh!?) so your inclusion may take a few weeks (I try to find time once a week to check, but can offer no guarantees). If you’d like to be a group admin, then please volunteer.
Many hands make light work.

Finally, please pass the invitation on to others who you’re still in contact with - the 25th anniversary reunion keg party* won’t be the same without everyone who made it happen.

    Hi,
would suggest to change the ex-mozilla logo on LinkedIn to include the mozilla mascot.

I like the largest logo with the white background best. Instantly recognizable. Let’s kickstart the alumni group into full gear again. Another thought - my watch says that it’s about time for a keg party.

Well, everyone who’s voted so far has gone for the waving moz so that’s what we’ll use until further notice. Linkedin need two versions of the artwork at 60×30 and 100×50 and have asked for them in GIF format (what? no PNG?) so here’s what they’ll be getting.

Ex-Mozilla Logo at 100x50 pixels. Ex-Mozilla Logo at 60x30 pixels.
