firefox almost 1.0

firefox 1.0 has advanced to the Preview Release (PR) stage, and it’s a significant improvement over 0.9.3 (which was already very good).

the obvious major additions are:

  • an improved find dialogue which is so much better that you wonder “why it didn’t always work like this?” and
  • the introduction of “live bookmarks” which use RSS to keep themselves fresh – if you have anything which spits out RSS or ATOM your application can now be bookmarked.

the underlying bugfixes and tidying make this feel like a browser that’s ready for primetime.

the only issue is have is that extension authors do have a habit of sticking their configuration options in the tools menu and not in the “options panel”.
