Google Calendar (no Palm Sync yet)

Google Calendar (no Palm Sync yet)

Google Calendar has now entered it’s public beta testing phase. The interface will be familiar to anyone who’s used GMail and any other calendar application before – it’s basically a hybrid of the two.

Palm Sync for Google Calendar is Needed

My initial impression is that it looks good, but without the ability to sync with handheld devices (e.g. Palm Pilot) it’s ubiquity is far from certain.

PC-using iPod owners will no doubt be delighted to know that their music machine can already sync with google calendar, thanks to it’s support for the iCal format (if Palm Inc. are listening, take note!)

iCal

The best of the low-hanging fruit so far is that it happily subscribes to iCal files, so publicly available calendars (which are typically produced by the legion of apple users who have been enjoying a good calendar app for a couple of years) are now far more accessible to web-based users.

Sharing

The ability to collaboratively author calendars looks good too, however, this seems to be broken at the moment.

Update: People want Palm Sync!

Since writing the above entry I’ve noticed an awful lot of people arriving here with similar desires… it’s understandable really, given that Palm have sold over 34 million PDA’s worldwide, and licensed the OS for use in millions more phones.

Yes, I’d also like to easily sync my Treo to my Google Calendar!

  3. Claudio says:

Please, I **NEED** Google Calendar sync with my Palm T|X.

  4. John says:

How can they not have this working. It is useless without this feature…

  5. Andrew Steele says:

For what its worth I installed the CompanionLink product today and it worked straight out of the box using the synchronisation between the Palm Desktop and Google Calendar. I had to empty the Google calendar in order to get rid of duplicate entries in Google on the first synch but thereafter it has worked just fine.

I’m currently on the 14 day trial so we’ll see if everything continues well :-)

  6. Paul Easton says:

With Google’s new SMS tools, recently announced, I’m thinking I don’t need Palm sync. Google can SMS me my daily aggenda, SMS appointment reminders, and I can send a text message to google to ask for my schedule for the day and it’ll send it back.

Okay, so it’ll suck if you lose service. And you may still want the various displays you get with Palm calendar apps.

Also, you want the contacts sync’d.

But SMS interaction with gCal rocks!

BTW, I’ve not been able to get Companion Link to work. Perhaps because I use a hosted Gmail account? I dunno. Bummer.

  7. Natalie says:

I second everyone who wants to sync Palm and Google. I installed the CompanionLink product today and it worked – BUT it only copied one of my calednars from Google to Palm and not all!!! How do we get around this??? HELP!!!

  8. LuisK says:

    I’m testing GooSync (http://www.goosync.com).
    Until now it’s working.

  9. Jessica says:

I have been using CompanionLink for about a month now. After a few minor
glitches and help from CompanionLink’s tech support, it has been working very
well. The only problem is many of my events create duplicates. Lots and lots
    of duplicates. Any ideas???

  10. Rich says:

Ok, I’m chuckling at this. Xynapt is not even in beta yet! …and it’s a commercial product so it’s not for me.

  11. R Dorn says:

Add me to the list of Palm users looking to sync with google calendar.

  12. Arnaud Hie says:

In France too we need this palm conduit ! !

  13. Michael says:

    Palm is so pathetic.

  14. Tony Fredricks says:

So, if a palm sync solution is found, someone please post here. Still waiting…
    Tony.

  15. Mary says:

Just want to add my request for syncing between Palm and gCal.

  16. Chris says:

Using Goosync is ok, but it’s complicated if you’re gonna use the USB cord (and you have a non-wireless palm like my Z22). I’m using AirSet, which looks like it has just as many features and overall awesomeness as GCal… but I want to use GCal, and without having to rig up programs upon programs. I beg for a better option than that.

  17. CJ says:

PLEASE!!!! We need an interface for the Palm Pilot Z22 and Google’s calendar. The Missing Sync has definitely missed the mark with it’s attempt. It corrupts your iCal.

  18. antonion says:

I would gladly pay for a app which would sync my palm treo 650 with my google calander. THIS WOULD BE GREAT!!!!

    PLEASE LET IT HAPPEN SOON

waiting with credit card ready for anyone who gets this done fast!!!

    • Alex says:

do you know if they came up with the software yet?

      • Rich says:

No idea! I gave up on the Palm V due to its lack of support. The company (Palm) has lost many devoted followers who now wouldn’t dream of touching the Pre after seeing their previous investment so poorly developed and maintained.

  19. Amy says:

If you have a treo you can Try goosync. I instaled it on my tx and it instaled my treo sync it does seem to sync but with reminders it crashed my tx. I’m assuming that had to do with the My treo sync as I do not have a treo.

  20. Matt says:

Love google calendar, but without a sync, i will have to move on.

  21. Neil says:

I chose Yahoo calendar in favour of Google for this very reason. It DOES sync with my palm – and has a task list too as a bonus. You install a free program from Yahoo’s website that lets you configure the Palm hotsync. And you can create a Yahoo home page that includes your next week’s events from your calendar (but not tasks, unfortunately – you have to go into the calendar itself to see those).
It appears to sync with pocketPC 2003 devices too, but not Windows mobile 5, unless anyone can correct me.

  22. Jim says:

I just tried out Companion Link and it worked pretty well… Multiple google calendars translated into different categories in my Treo 650. 14 day trial is almost up… It’s the best I’ve found so far so I’ll probably buy it.

  23. Jay says:

Hi Guys, you many want to try: http://www.GooSync.com. This is a FREE service that will synchronize almost any device, including Palms, with Google Calendar. Happy GooSyncing Jay (GooSync;)

    • Mary Ellen Wessels says:

FWIW – I’ve been cheerfully using goosync for quite a while now. It’s worked very well. The only reason I’m even considering changing is I don’t love the “tasks” implementation. I’d like to be able to give things multiple categories for example. (home *and* computer for example)

But yes, goosync is a great service and the support has been quick and friendly.

  24. Dan says:

Hey all, I have come up with a little work around for syncing my palm. i subscribe to my gcalendar through ical and then have an ical calendar that i post at icalx.com which i subscribe to at gcal…any appointments that i put in my palm i can then move to the appropriate gcalendar. it’s not perfect but it’s free and works.

  25. Mike says:

I agree. So many Palm users and a good solution doesn’t exist to sync with Google.

I’m not sure what to do now. Goosync no longer works on my Treo even with a Hard Reset and multiple tech support calls. SyncML just hangs. Also, Companion Link doesn’t support Palm Desktop 6. I may need to switch to Blackberry (which has much more support for Google-syncing) because if I can’t access my secretary’s calendar, my Treo is useless.

  26. Chris says:

I was skeptical of trying GooSync but I finally bought the full version and it works GREAT for me with my Treo 700p. I have also used the Google Sync with the Blackberry 8830 and that is a great product. It would be nice if Google developed this for Palm, but in the meantime, I would try GooSync.

  27. Loray says:

Goosync is good if you paid for the internet package, which on my Treo I didn’t. I just need to be able to sync from my desktop to Google calendar. I found one solution but it’s pricey. The 15 day demo worked though seamlessly. Check it out if you really don’t care about the $25/year subscription or $65 lifetime price tag.

  28. Loray says:

Sorry, I forgot to say it’s for iCal to Google, but you can download the iSync Conduit setup where you sync your device to iCal instead of the Palm Desktop.

  29. John F. says:

    http://www.goosync.com

Over-the-air sync between Google Calendar and Palm Calendar.

Now also syncs Google Contacts with Palm Contacts.

  30. Doyle says:

I’m with you. I wish Google Calendar would sync with my Palm Treo 700p, or even with Palm Desktop.

Its tough, found other solutions. So far GooSync working pretty well. Wish Google had done this themselves. Hats off to GooSync for beating them to it.

  31. Felicia Jacobs says:

I would like to be part of the test. I would love to sync my calender into web
    based e-mail at gmail.

    Thank You!
    Felicia

  32. Beth says:

Help, I love the google calendar and have several people at work using it. They are all hooked but are thinking of moving to something different because it doesnt link to their palms. When is the sync going to be avaialble to users.

  33. Anke says:

Please, from the Luddite who loves Gmail and Gmail calendar – please develop a means of syncing my palm/phone schedule with Gmail calendar!

  34. Kristina says:

I haven’t tried this, but this looks like it could be a solution.

  35. Albert says:

    In response to Rich:

I’ve tried CompanionLink and found it to be utterly useless. Hitting the synchronize button just pops up an error box that says:Failed to load ClxGoogleCalendar.dll

In order for you not to receive this error message you need to install Microsoft.NET Framework Version 2.0 or higher, thought you should know in case still want to use it.

  36. Rich says:

Thanks Albert. I’ve migrated to the iPhone for my PDA, but this may be of use to others. I’ll update the original comment with the info too.
