Google Calendar (no Palm Sync yet)
April 13th, 2006, by Rich.
Google Calendar has now entered it’s public beta testing phase. The interface will be familiar to anyone who’s used GMail and any other calendar application before - it’s basically a hybrid of the two.
Palm Sync for Google Calendar is Needed
My initial impression is that it looks good, but without the ability to sync with handheld devices (e.g. Palm Pilot) it’s ubiquity is far from certain.
PC-using iPod owners will no doubt be delighted to know that their music machine can already sync with google calendar, thanks to it’s support for the iCal format (if Palm Inc. are listening, take note!)
iCal
The best of the low-hanging fruit so far is that it happily subscribes to iCal files, so publicly available calendars (which are typically produced by the legion of apple users who have been enjoying a good calendar app for a couple of years) are now far more accessible to web-based users.
Sharing
The ability to collaboratively author calendars looks good too, however, this seems to be broken at the moment.
Update: People want Palm Sync!
Since writing the above entry I’ve noticed an awful lot of people arriving here with similar desires… it’s understandable really, given that Palm have sold over 34 million PDA’s worldwide, and licensed the OS for use in millions more phones.

How can they not have this working. It is useless without this feature…

For what its worth I installed the CompanionLink product today and it worked straight out of the box using the synchronisation between the Palm Desktop and Google Calendar. I had to empty the Google calendar in order to get rid of duplicate entries in Google on the first synch but thereafter it has worked just fine.
I’m currently on the 14 day trial so we’ll see if everything continues well :-)

With Google’s new SMS tools, recently announced, I’m thinking I don’t need Palm sync. Google can SMS me my daily aggenda, SMS appointment reminders, and I can send a text message to google to ask for my schedule for the day and it’ll send it back.
Okay, so it’ll suck if you lose service. And you may still want the various displays you get with Palm calendar apps.
Also, you want the contacts sync’d.
But SMS interaction with gCal rocks!
BTW, I’ve not been able to get Companion Link to work. Perhaps because I use a hosted Gmail account? I dunno. Bummer.

I have been using CompanionLink for about a month now. After a few minor
glitches and help from CompanionLink’s tech support, it has been working very
well. The only problem is many of my events create duplicates. Lots and lots
of duplicates. Any ideas???
