Google Calendar (no Palm Sync yet)
April 13th, 2006, by Rich.
Google Calendar has now entered it’s public beta testing phase. The interface will be familiar to anyone who’s used GMail and any other calendar application before - it’s basically a hybrid of the two.
Palm Sync for Google Calendar is Needed
My initial impression is that it looks good, but without the ability to sync with handheld devices (e.g. Palm Pilot) it’s ubiquity is far from certain.
PC-using iPod owners will no doubt be delighted to know that their music machine can already sync with google calendar, thanks to it’s support for the iCal format (if Palm Inc. are listening, take note!)
iCal
The best of the low-hanging fruit so far is that it happily subscribes to iCal files, so publicly available calendars (which are typically produced by the legion of apple users who have been enjoying a good calendar app for a couple of years) are now far more accessible to web-based users.
Sharing
The ability to collaboratively author calendars looks good too, however, this seems to be broken at the moment.
Update: People want Palm Sync!
Since writing the above entry I’ve noticed an awful lot of people arriving here with similar desires… it’s understandable really, given that Palm have sold over 34 million PDA’s worldwide, and licensed the OS for use in millions more phones.

If you have a treo you can Try goosync. I instaled it on my tx and it instaled my treo sync it does seem to sync but with reminders it crashed my tx. I’m assuming that had to do with the My treo sync as I do not have a treo.

I chose Yahoo calendar in favour of Google for this very reason. It DOES sync with my palm - and has a task list too as a bonus. You install a free program from Yahoo’s website that lets you configure the Palm hotsync. And you can create a Yahoo home page that includes your next week’s events from your calendar (but not tasks, unfortunately - you have to go into the calendar itself to see those).
It appears to sync with pocketPC 2003 devices too, but not Windows mobile 5, unless anyone can correct me.

I just tried out Companion Link and it worked pretty well… Multiple google calendars translated into different categories in my Treo 650. 14 day trial is almost up… It’s the best I’ve found so far so I’ll probably buy it.

Hey all, I have come up with a little work around for syncing my palm. i subscribe to my gcalendar through ical and then have an ical calendar that i post at icalx.com which i subscribe to at gcal…any appointments that i put in my palm i can then move to the appropriate gcalendar. it’s not perfect but it’s free and works.

I agree. So many Palm users and a good solution doesn’t exist to sync with Google.
I’m not sure what to do now. Goosync no longer works on my Treo even with a Hard Reset and multiple tech support calls. SyncML just hangs. Also, Companion Link doesn’t support Palm Desktop 6. I may need to switch to Blackberry (which has much more support for Google-syncing) because if I can’t access my secretary’s calendar, my Treo is useless.

I was skeptical of trying GooSync but I finally bought the full version and it works GREAT for me with my Treo 700p. I have also used the Google Sync with the Blackberry 8830 and that is a great product. It would be nice if Google developed this for Palm, but in the meantime, I would try GooSync.

Goosync is good if you paid for the internet package, which on my Treo I didn’t. I just need to be able to sync from my desktop to Google calendar. I found one solution but it’s pricey. The 15 day demo worked though seamlessly. Check it out if you really don’t care about the $25/year subscription or $65 lifetime price tag.

Sorry, I forgot to say it’s for iCal to Google, but you can download the iSync Conduit setup where you sync your device to iCal instead of the Palm Desktop.
