google groups – not from yahoo

you may be interested to discover that it is not possible to have a google group subscribed to a yahoo group.

one reason why you might want to do this is to provide people who are not current group members with a means by which to adequately search the history of a group’s conversations, for example, to avoid the same questions being asked over, and over.

a search facility is something yahoo could be expected to provide, however their current system is such that they are crippling the searchability of their content by segmenting the search into blocks of approximately 110 messages – if your group contains 1100 messages, you’ll need to run the same search ten times. that’s not exactly useful.

enter google groups. as a google user i can create a google group, and good news:

  • it’s fast, and highly searchable
  • it doesn’t add an advertising footer to every message
  • the google web interface is cleaner and faster than yahoo

however there is also some bad news:yahoo not allowing messages to go to google groups.

  • yahoo refuse to send mail to it and show its (verified, fully operational) email address as “disabled” (see pic).

if anyone has any insight into why this is happening (rather than why it might be happening), or knows of any simple workarounds, please comment!
