At least I have the 'grumpy'T-shirt! And as I AM old... £500 of wine might not last me a lifetime! :)

What's wrong with 40% off?

Nothing at all! ...and furthermore "if only...".

The normal "deal" for any walk in punter is "3 for 2" i.e. 33% off the price on the sticker (a price which Thresher set artificially high in order give the appearance of (a) better quality wine and (b) a really good deal).

That's Sales and Marketing 101 stuff.

33% off assumes all three bottles are the same price - I'm guessing it's the cheapest bottle that's free so the average saving will be less than 33%, this is good for Thresher on a day to day basis, but it does mean this offer isn't that hollow.

So knock it down to 30% and that means the offer was for 10%, not 40% off what you'd normally pay in a Thresher.

i.e you normally get 30% off an artificially inflated price, and this offer gives only 10% more than that.

What's wrong with 10% off then? Nothing, but there's nothing interesting about it either. Certainly nothing you'd bother mailing your friends about.

Thresher got a bonanza pre-christmas rush through some cleverly seeded coupons that were really only worth 10% off Thresher prices, which are higher than most supermarkets anyway.

Grumpy? Nah, not really, try reading it in a different accent. Baffled by people's willingness to reiterate without questioning, totally!

Not only did I not receive the spam, I was handed an actual piece of paper (!) by my French teacher yesterday offering 40% off wines, but the small print said it was only on purchases of over £500 !
